Summer Learning, Summer Fun

Children across all communities experience learning loss if they don't engage in summer learning.

The academic "achievement gap" between underserved communities compared with middle-income communities is very serious, and widens for children not actively engaged in learning. For every one line of print read by a child living in an underserved community, children in other communities read three. At Life Pieces, we strive to reverse summer learning loss and achieve summer learning gains with an approach that bolsters academic skills within the Life Pieces framework of creative expression, and opportunities for social/emotional growth.

Consistent Learning

At Life Pieces To Masterpieces, academic engagement continues in earnest over the summer. Tutoring in reading and math - two subjects where learning loss is most significant over the summer - happens several times a week. This summer, with our focus on Mexico, learning isn't just brushing up on math and literacy, it means experiencing cross-cultural education, practicing a new language, and continuing artistic expression. Consistency counts, and our Apprentices, instead of experiencing learning loss, make academic gains every summer.

Creative Learning

Creative learning and expression are crucial to cognitive and social and emotional development. This summer, with our cultural focus on Mexico, creative learning includes dramatic play, storytelling, games, and, of course, visual art. All these forms of creative expression encourage personal growth as they add to our Apprentices' understanding of Mexico.

Cultural Learning

Our Apprentices are constantly expanding their knowledge of other cultures, while also gaining a deeper knowledge of the robust history and culture of Washington DC. Apprentices learn about local historical figures, visit nearby parks, city attractions, and attended a Nationals game! And of course, our Apprentices are doing in-depth study of the country of Mexico.
