Where Transformation Happens: LPTM Goes Global!

Celebrating a Summer of Arts, Dance, Literacy, and Global Citizenship

Ward 7, Washington DC.

Dakar, Senegal.

Put the two together, and you get LPTM's 2014 Connecting Communities Across the Globe Summer Program.

Many of our young men entered the summer not knowing that the West African country of Senegal existed. But now, as the summer wraps up and we prepare for our End of Summer Art Experience, they have cooked and eaten Senegalese food; learned multiple forms of Senegalese art, music, and dance; learned the basics of Wolof and French, the country's two primary languages; explored its history and culture; and created performances to share all of this new knowledge with the community.

They have also spent time learning and exploring the history, arts, and culture of both of their immediate neighborhoods and of the city of Washington as a whole, allowing them to develop pride in and connection to their community and to gain exposure to parts of the District they may not normally experience.

Finally, through our partnerships with George Washington and American University, our Apprentices received both group and one-on-one literacy tutoring using our engaging Literacy Through the Arts curriculum. With the help of volunteer students, our young men used creative processes including storytelling, theater, and art to build their vocabulary and reading skills throughout the summer.

And at our pilot site with our amazing new partners at the Bishop Walker School for Boys, new Apprentices experienced the same transformative programming - with Peru as their country of study.

After a number of years innovating, experimenting, and expanding, we have found this model to be an effective - and, just as importantly, extremely fun - way to engage our young men in the process of building global citizenship and positive identity while preventing summer learning loss.

Throughout the summer, we have seen remarkable growth in our Apprentices. They have built strong friendships with each other and embraced the support of our Teachers and Mentors. They have grown comfortable practicing mindfulness and connecting with themselves (one of our most frequent daily questions: "Can I go to the meditation room to relax?"). They have embraced the joy of creativity and exploration, creating art as they learn about new cultures and communities. They have found a home in our environment of love, security, and expression, reinforcing with each other the language and values of our Human Development System.

And above all, each of our Apprentices has expressed his own unique brilliance in his own unique way. Seeing over 90 young men realizing and embracing their own potential - and joyously sharing that potential with each other - is magical to watch.

That's why we do this work. That's why we give all of ourselves, every day, to advancing our mission. That's why we're endlessly thankful for your support, and why we're proud to have you in our family.

We look forward to carrying this spirit of joyful expression forward for generations to come.
