Life Pieces To Masterpieces Apprentices partner with D.C. Commission of the Arts and Humanities for Black and Green In D.C. Initiative

In partnership with the DC Commission of Arts and Humanities, the apprentices of Life Pieces To Masterpieces have worked with dedicated summer youth employees to help launch their new environmentally focused initiative entitled, Black and Green in Washington DC. The program is designed to connect young, African American men to their natural environment, expose and engage them in environmental justice issues, and help them discover new employment opportunities in the environmental field. Participation in the program has provided our apprentices the opportunity to demonstrate a positive attitude, open mind, and a willingness to try new experiences. Over the summer they have engaged in meaningful watershed education experiences, including a field study via a canoe and/or pontoon tour of the Anacostia River, researched and explored low impact development design, including a visit to the state of the art Green Building Institute (www.greenbuildinginstitute.org), and ultimately will be installing a butterfly habitat restoration garden on the property of our program site. Throughout the program apprentices have reflected on their relationship to the natural world through photography, journal writing, team presentations, and of course brilliantly beautiful artwork!
